Baalbek houses a Mamluk-era cemetery, locally known as Qubbat Al Sa’idayn.
Description
The Qubba was built during the reign of Mamluk Sultan “Al-Malik An-Nasir Faraj”, to be a burial ground for the Sultanate’s representatives in Baalbek.
It is a rectangular shaped-two-room mausoleum which walls and dome collapsed over time due to neglect. The main entrance is decorated with arabesque reliefs, and its door holds a plaque bearing an inscription stating that the Qubba was erected in 812AH/1410AC, above the tombs of two Mamluk officials of the followers of el-Zaher Barquq (the first Sultan of the Mamluk Burji dynasty of Egypt)
It is located right next to the Roman gate of the colony of Baalbek. It is one of the few remaining and well preserved Mamluk-era Qubba in Lebanon.
